The vagina is a closed muscular channel that extends from the outer part of the female genital area (vulva) to the neck of the uterus (cervix). The vagina enables sexual intercourse and childbirth. It receives the penis during intercourse and also serves as a channel for menstrual discharge from the uterus. The vagina is also known as the "sheath."
